Career path

Data Scientist

You become the person in the room who knows what's actually true.

Companies make billion-rupee decisions on gut feeling until someone shows them the data. That's you. You find out why sales dropped, whether the new feature really worked, and who's about to churn, and you say it clearly enough that leadership changes course. It's detective work powered by statistics.

A day in your future life
09:45

The CEO pings: 'Orders fell 12% this week. Why?' Everyone has a theory.

10:30

SQL across orders, sessions and payments. The drop is only on Android, only on one app version, only at payment.

12:00

Found it: a payment SDK update broke UPI for some devices. You send the chart to engineering.

15:00

You design next week's pricing A/B test: sample size, duration, guardrail metrics. No peeking allowed.

17:30

One-page memo to leadership. The fix ships tonight and orders recover. People start asking for you by name.

What you'll build

  • Root-cause investigations that change decisions
  • A/B tests and experiment analysis
  • Predictive models (churn, demand, risk)
  • Dashboards and memos that leadership acts on

Your maths edge

Statistics is the job. Hypothesis tests, confidence intervals, regression, Bayesian thinking and causal inference: your degree covered them, and this role uses them every day. You'll see the flawed analysis that others miss.

Demand

Strong at GCCs, BFSI, e-commerce and consulting. Many data scientists start as data analysts, which is the most fresher-friendly entry point in data.

Entry pay (India, rough)

Roughly โ‚น5โ€“14 LPA in India (analyst entry โ‚น4โ€“8 LPA). Rises quickly with impact.

The honest truth

Pure 'data scientist' titles for freshers are competitive. The proven path is Data Analyst or Product Analyst โ†’ Data Scientist within 1โ€“2 years. SQL and statistics get you hired, and fancy models alone don't.

2-minute taste test

Try a few minutes of the job

Three moments from a data scientist's week. Pick an answer, then see the reasoning. There's no score and no right path for you. It's just a feel for the work.

Situation 1 of 3

An A/B test of a new checkout button: after 2 days, variant B is +8% with p = 0.03. The PM wants to ship today.

The roadmap

From your first line of code to people using what you built

Tick off steps as you go. Finishing a quest reveals a sealed insight, and finishing a stage unlocks a capability. Everything is saved in this browser.

Before you start: where to use AI (and where not to)

Use AI freely for

  • Explaining a concept, an error message or someone else's code, then asking follow-up 'why' questions
  • Quizzing you: 'ask me 5 questions on what I just learned'
  • Reviewing code you wrote: bugs, edge cases, security holes

Use carefully

  • Writing code for a concept you're learning: write it yourself first, then compare with the AI's version
  • Choosing libraries: AI may suggest outdated packages, so check the docs and the last release date
  • Facts and numbers: verify anything you'll put in a README, resume or memo

Don't use AI for

  • Code you can't explain line by line. If you can't explain it, you don't own it, and interviews will show it
  • Skipping the struggle. The 20 minutes you spend stuck is when learning happens
  • Deciding what to build or what your analysis concludes. That judgement is your job
Type the first version yourself. Delegate the second. Review every one.

Every quest has its own "use AI for / avoid" note. The full guide is in the AI Playbook.

Sprint Zero

Five days: Python, SQL, the statistics you'll actually use, and a notebook workflow. Depth comes later, from real questions.

5 days4 quests~22 hours
Finish this stage to unlock: You can query, clean and explore data and know which statistical tool fits which question.

Learn by building

Seven investigations, each teaching one tool by answering a real question.

~5 weeks8 quests~52 hours
Finish this stage to unlock: You can investigate, test, predict and communicate, which is the full data science loop.
Job signal: Start applying for data analyst, product analyst and DS internships now. How to apply โ†’

Company-style builds

Real analytics briefs. Ambiguous questions, messy data, and a decision at the end.

~3.5 weeks3 quests~64 hours
Finish this stage to unlock: You can take a vague business question to a defensible recommendation that leadership acts on.
Job signal: Apply broadly now: data analyst, product analyst, data scientist roles. How to apply โ†’

Architect mode

You know how the pieces work, so stop typing every line. From here on you design, write the spec, direct AI agents and review their work like a tech lead.

~1.5 weeks2 quests~17 hours
Finish this stage to unlock: You can design a system, break it into slices, direct AI agents to build it and catch their mistakes before users do.

Your meaningful project

One project that real people use beats ten tutorial clones. This becomes the story in every interview.

4โ€“6 weeks3 quests~73 hours
Finish this stage to unlock: You have shipped something people actually use, and you can tell the story of how you built it, measured it and improved it. That's the whole job.
Job signal: This project is your headline. Put it at the top of your resume and LinkedIn and talk about it in every interview. How to apply โ†’
